Now in its twelfth year, Russia’s ongoing war against Ukraine has transformed from a singular rupture into an enduring state of crisis; from a suspension of law into a law of suspension. At a moment when grief and anger dominate public and private life, envisioning the future can feel out of reach. Solomiya No. 5—After Now reflects on hope and freedom not as a triumph, but as a complex, often compromised condition, entangled in inequality, shaped by trauma, and co-opted by power. By gathering voices from Yemen to Ukraine, from Georgia to Germany, we turn our attention to the present, to the conditions shaping the paths that futures may follow. With contributions from 21 artists, journalists and scientists, we navigate the deadlocks of communication and the paradox of imagining a post-war future within ongoing war. They hold space for doubt, contradiction, and the possibility of being wrong—through testimonies of soldiers and veterans, and expressions of embodied experiences of dancers, imagined chess figures, dopamine supermen, astronauts, and dried watermelons.

Who Owns the Alphabet?

A performative book presentation by young Ukrainians in Berlin

On June 24 at 6pm, young Ukrainians living in Berlin will present the photo book Alphabet of War at the PopUp Hall of the America Memorial Library, in an event organized by Kult’ura .

Since the full-scale invasion of Ukraine, Germany has received over 1 million refugees, including around 300,000 minors.

Under the guidance of artist Masha Pryven, a group of young people who fled to Berlin from Russia’s war of aggression against Ukraine reinterpreted the German alphabet. For the past two years, they have met weekly to communicate their experiences of fleeing and starting anew through photography. They have also responded to the political debate about the war within German society.

Twenty-six letters are staged in photographs and filled with personal reflections.

Alphabet of War is not only a collection of testimonies of life in exile—it is also an invitation to explore the transformative power of language and images.

The performative book presentation offers insights into the project and the book: into personal stories, photographic processes, and collective decisions.
Publisher Regelindis Westphal will also be present to speak about the path from a collaborative photography project to a publication.

Modernism in Ukraine

With the support of the Ukrainian Institute in Germany and our co-operation partners, the exhibition series on modernist architecture in Ukraine are now on show in Chemnitz, the European Capital of Culture 2025.

The three exemplary exhibition sections show the work of architects of Jewish origin in Lviv, the famous ensemble of Svoboda Square and the Derzhprom building in Kharkiv, and a selection of designs for the Ukrainian State Theatre, which were created in 1930 as part of an international competition. All three themes emphasize the importance of Ukraine in the development of modernist architecture and raise awareness of the shared European heritage of this turbulent period and the devastation of the war in Ukraine.

The exhibition series, funded by the German government, was created in collaboration with Ukrainian and Polish academics. It was developed as part of the 2022 Triennale der Moderne festival and premiered in Berlin, in 2022.

The Kharkiv Trilogy

A number of Mykola Ridnyi’s films and series of photographs relate to his hometown Kharkiv. Ukraine’s second largest city, this scientific, cultural and logistical center became particularly fragile because of its geographical proximity to the Russian border. Three of his films, Regular Places (2015), NO! NO! NO! (2017) and The District (2023) form a trilogy which expresses social, political, and urban transformations in the city over the last decade.

After the screening in Between Bridges foundation, as a part of Kyiv perennial in Berlin, the film program will be presented in open-air format in the Kharkiv Park, located in Steglitz-Zehlendorf district. Previously nameless park behind the Schwartz villa opposite the Steglitz roundabout was named Kharkiv Park in October 2022 as a gesture of solidarity with Kharkiv citizens and in memory of victims in Russian war against Ukraine.

In the film Regular Places, the confrontation between supporters of an independent Ukraine and European integration on the one hand and “separatists” who wanted to join Russia on the other strongly affected the city of Kharkiv. The street confrontations that ended with the defeat of the pro-Russian movement left behind traumas that marked the city for several years. In the film, the sounds of violence from the past break into the scenes of the relatively peaceful life that followed.

The main heroes of NO! NO! NO! are young people from Kharkiv. Reaching their early twenties coincided with the breakout of the war in the neighboring region of Donbas. A queer activist and poet, a fashion model, a group of street artists, a creator of a computer games – all of them are artists or working in the creative industries, typical of peaceful life in a big city. However, the proximity to the war affects each of the characters and their activities.

The District recites the artist’s memories of places of his childhood and youth that no longer exist. In 2022, a neighborhood of Northern Saltivka in Kharkiv became a frontline in the Russian invasion and suffered significant destruction. A walk through the “ghost district” forges a coexistence of past and present, outward and inward landscapes, facts and recollections.

Nikita Liskov (UA). Presenting his new award winning animation movie “Deep Love” (Grand Prix of Turku Animated Film Festival 2019). And much more!

Nikita Liskov is an animated movie maker from Ukraine with 10+ years of experience. He’s taking part in international movie festivals, leading lectures on history of animation and running the private “Animation School” in Dnepr (UA) where he also teachs. His movie “I’ve Bought The Bicycle” won the Grand Prix of “Where are Movies” festival. Nikita’s new project “Deep Love” was the first ukrainian movie which took part in Annecy International Animated Film Festival (France) and winner of International Leipzig Festival DOK (Germany) and Turku Animated Film Festival (Finland).

During the evening Nikita will show his movies, go deep in details of animated films production process and answer the question why it’s cool to make animations in modern Ukraine.

Dear friends, to celebrate Berlin International Film Festival — Berlinale 70th edition, kul’tura and Ukrainian Film Club Berlin, in cooperation with Space Meduza bar, would like to introduce you to some best-ofs of Ukrainian film.

There will be screenings of renown classics, as well as contemporary films. All the films will be screened with English subtitles. The Q+A will be held in English.

Sergej Paradzhanov’s “Wild Horses of Fire”Sergej Paradzhanov’s “Wild Horses of Fire” (Shadows of Forgotten Ancestors) is based on the classic book by Ukrainian writer Mykhailo Kotsiubynsky. The film was Parajanov’s first major work and earned him international acclaim for its rich use of costume and color. The film also features a detailed portrayal of Ukrainian Hutsul culture, showing not only the harsh Carpathian environment and brutal family rivalries, but also the various aspects of Hutsul traditions, music, costumes, and dialect.
Harvard University has added to the list of 100 obligatory films for the film students.

Young Ukrainian Directors @BerlinaleThe screening + meet&greet with Ukrainian directors Zhanna Ozirna and Iryna Tsilyk, participating in this year’s BERLINALE will be hosted by Ukrainian Film Club in Berlin and kul’tura agency, with support of Space Meduza Bar and RADAR films.
Zhanna Ozirna became the only Ukrainian representative to attend the annual Berlinale Talents, a weekly program for young filmmakers from around the world. It consists of educational and hands-on lessons from leading filmmakers and professionals. 255 participants from 86 countries were selected this year.
Iryna Tsilyk’s debut film “Earth is Blue as an Orange” has just won a Directing Award at the Sundance Festival and will participate in the Generation Competition of the Berlin Film Festival.
During the event, we will screen short films and have an opportunity to discuss them with directors in a Q&A session.
Bonus track: a short film by Yarema Malashchuk and Roman Khimei “Dedicates to the all the young people of the world” 2019, about the Cxema Rave parties in Kyiv.

“Earth”“Earth” Is a 1930 Soviet film by Ukrainian director Alexander Dovzhenko. It is Part 3 of Dovzhenko’s “Ukraine Trilogy” (along with Zvenigora and Arsenal).
Despite (of because) of the film’s international success, also in Berlin and Venice, it was forbidden in Soviet Union due to wrong ideological sentiment.
The film was voted one of the twelve greatest films of all time by a group of 117 film historians at the 1958 Brussels World’s Fair and named one of the top ten greatest films of all time by the International Film Critics Symposium.
The film will be screened with DakhaBrakha soundtrack.

Holodomor was a man-made famine in Soviet Union, killing millions of Ukrainians 90 years ago. It was planned by Stalin in order to eliminate Ukrainian independence movement.
